Built 2022–2025Out of production2 pilots

Fourth of five versions of Cessna's Model 560XL, between the XLS+ and the Ascend.

68JetGrade70 = typical for midsize jets

The Gen2 is the last and best-equipped Pro Line 21 version of Cessna's best-selling midsize line, with short-runway ability, low running costs and a modern cabin. It flies no farther than an XLS+, and $15M also buys a roomier Legacy 450 or Latitude.

Buy it if

You want a young, warrantied midsize jet for trips under 1,500 nm with up to eight passengers, use shorter runways, will crew it with two pilots and value Textron's support network over cabin size.

Skip it if

You need nonstop coast to coast or a six-foot flat-floor cabin (Legacy 450, Latitude), want a Garmin G5000 cockpit with autothrottles (Ascend), or want the same performance for far less (XLS+).

Biggest compromise

Range for the money. With four passengers and NBAA IFR reserves (the standard fuel safety margin) the Gen2 flies about 1,858 nm, the same as an XLS+, and about 1,490 nm with every seat full.

What came before and after

What changed from the Cessna Citation XLS+ (560XL)

  • Maximum takeoff weight rises 130 lb to 20,330 lb; zero-fuel weight rises 260 lb to 15,360 lb.
  • New pedestal seats from the Citation X+ and Sovereign+ that track along the floor and swivel.
  • Wireless cabin management with a touchscreen moving map, plus wireless charging and USB-C at every seat.
  • Lighted airstair door with a weather curtain, and quieter cabin acoustics.
  • Optional fold-down front couch for in-flight baggage access and optional speakerless Bongiovi sound.
  • Same PW545C engines and Collins Pro Line 21 cockpit, so speed and range are unchanged.

  • Cessna Citation Ascend (560XL) instead: Same cabin length with Garmin G5000, autothrottles, a flat-floor option and about 1,940 nm with four passengers, at a higher new price.
  • Embraer Legacy 450 instead: Six-foot flat-floor cabin and about 2,450 nm seats-full at a similar pre-owned price, but published hourly costs run about $1,260 higher.
  • Cessna Citation XLS+ (560XL) instead: Same engines, range and runway performance with asks of $6.5–9.2M in October 2026, but older interiors and no factory warranty.

  • Engine low-utilization borescope every 24 months
  • Fire-bottle wiring check every 24 months

Most Gen2s carry Textron PowerAdvantage+, listed at $383 per engine-hour on a 2024 example; confirm both engines are enrolled and the contract transfers.

Known issues

  • Engine program terms

Off-program PW545C overhauls cost $850,000–$1.1M per engine at 2019 prices; confirm program level and transferability before closing.

  • Warranty end dates

Factory warranty runs five years from delivery, so 2022 airplanes lose airframe and engine coverage during 2027.

  • Outgoing avionics generation

Pro Line 21 without autothrottles; the Ascend's Garmin G5000 cockpit is likely to weigh on Gen2 resale.

Review

Strengths

  • Takes off in about 3,600 ft at maximum weight and lands in 3,180 ft at sea level.
  • Costs about $5,225 an hour at 300 hours a year, roughly 12% below midsize peers on comparable published figures.
  • Five-year factory warranty from delivery, backed by the service network behind more than 1,000 Model 560XLs.

Limitations

  • About 1,490 nm with every seat full, roughly 45% less than a Legacy 450, Praetor 500 or Citation Latitude.
  • The cabin is 5 ft 6 in wide and reaches 5 ft 8 in only in the dropped aisle; no flat floor.
  • Pro Line 21 cockpit without autothrottles; the Garmin-equipped Ascend replaced it after about 61 were built.

The Citation XLS Gen2 is the fourth of five versions of Cessna's Model 560XL, the straight-wing midsize line that began with the Excel in 1998. Textron unveiled it in October 2021 at a list price of about $15.5M, the FAA approved it in spring 2022 and the first customer airplane was delivered in May 2022. Industry shipment figures show about 61 were built before the Citation Ascend took over in late 2025, which makes the Gen2 one of the shortest production runs in the family. It keeps the XLS+ engines, Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545Cs rated at 4,119 lbf each, and the four-screen Collins Pro Line 21 cockpit.

Pilot's take

From the cockpit the Gen2 is an XLS+ with a nicer cabin behind you. FADEC handles starts and power setting, the Pro Line 21 suite puts four large displays in front of two pilots, and trailing-link main gear makes landings forgiving. It needs about 3,600 ft to take off at maximum weight, which is the reason to own one. There are no autothrottles, and the Mach 0.75 limit keeps cruise near 430–440 kt, so plan legs accordingly. On a pre-buy, read the program contracts and warranty dates before you look at the interior.

Who this is for

A company or family flight department with two-pilot crews flying 200–400 hours a year on 500–1,500 nm trips, buying at about $14.5–15.5M and budgeting roughly $1.4–1.75M a year, that wants a nearly new airplane under warranty.
