Phenom 100EX

In production1 pilot

The fourth and current version of Embraer's Phenom 100, the company's smallest jet.

70JetGrade70 = typical for very light jets

The 100EX keeps the 100EV's engines, cockpit and range but gives passengers a much nicer cabin and adds runway-overrun and windshear alerts. It is a sensible new jet for short trips, held back by shorter range than most rivals.

Buy it if

You fly two to four people on trips under about 900 nm, want a new jet with a factory warranty for around $5 million, and value a roomy cabin, a large rear baggage hold and Embraer's support.

Skip it if

You regularly need 1,200 nm or more nonstop, want a cabin you can stand up in, or plan to fill every seat and the fuel tanks on the same trip.

Biggest compromise

Range and payload. Embraer quotes 1,178 nm with only four people aboard, pilot included, and with full tanks the jet carries about 646 lb of people and bags.

Lineage

What came before and after

What changed from the Embraer Phenom 100EV

  • Redesigned seats with taller backs, retractable armrests and tables that fold flush into the wall.
  • A side-facing fifth seat and a belted lavatory seat are now standard, not options.
  • New headliner adds about an inch of headroom; the cockpit partition is gone.
  • Three cabin windows per side instead of four; the two lavatory windows were removed.
  • Adds runway-overrun, unstable-approach and predictive windshear alerts plus automatic 3D weather radar.
  • Engines, wing and published range are unchanged from the 100EV.

  • Honda HondaJet Elite II instead: More range and an enclosed lavatory at the back, at a higher new price.
  • Cessna Citation M2 Gen2 instead: Similar speed with more published range, backed by Textron's large service network; a natural cross-shop.
  • Embraer Phenom 300E instead: If you outgrow the 100EX, it adds about 800 nm of range, more seats and an enclosed lavatory, at a much higher price.

  • 120-month inspection with gear every 120 months
  • Engine low-use inspection every 144 months

Most owners enroll in Pratt & Whitney Canada's hourly ESP plan; without one, owners report overhauls near $1 million per engine.

Known issues

  • Engine overhaul cost exposure

Without an hourly engine plan, owners report overhaul costs near $1 million per engine every 3,500 hours.

  • Icing procedures matter

A fatal 2014 Phenom 100 accident was tied to de-icing not being turned on; follow ice-protection procedures closely.

  • Ten-year inspection bill

The 120-month check with gear overhaul runs about $200,000–250,000 plus findings; first due early in the 2030s.

Review

The full review

Strengths

  • Cruises at up to 406 knots and climbs to 41,000 feet, quick for a jet of its size.
  • Takes off in 3,190 ft at maximum weight at sea level, opening short runways many small jets avoid.
  • The redesigned cabin adds a standard fifth seat, taller seatbacks and 64 cu ft of total baggage space.

Limitations

  • Embraer's 1,178 nm range assumes four people aboard, pilot included; a full cabin means shorter legs.
  • Engines need overhaul every 3,500 hours; without an hourly plan, owners report about $1 million per engine.
  • At 4 ft 11 in tall the cabin means stooping, and the lavatory is a belted seat at the back.

The Phenom 100EX is the fourth and current version of Embraer's smallest business jet, a line that began with the original Phenom 100 in 2008 and moved through the 100E and 100EV. Embraer unveiled the 100EX in October 2023 with its certification already in hand. It keeps the 100EV's engines, wing and Garmin touchscreen cockpit and puts its effort into the cabin and the safety alerts. Business Jet Traveler put the new price at about $4.995 million in 2024, unchanged from the model it replaced.

Pilot's take

The 100EX flies like the 100EV, which is a compliment. The Garmin touchscreen cockpit is built for one pilot, and the jet is comfortable on short runways. What the 100EX adds for the pilot is better warning: runway-overrun alerts, stabilized-approach callouts and predictive windshear target the kinds of mistakes that catch single pilots. Plan fuel honestly, though. With a full cabin the range shrinks quickly, and winter headwinds on the East Coast can turn a planned nonstop into a stop.

Who this is for

An owner-pilot or small company flying 150–350 hours a year, mostly two to four passengers on trips of 300–900 nm, who wants a new, warrantied jet near $5 million flown by one pilot.
