Hawker Beechcraft · Super-Midsize Jet
Hawker 4000
A stand-alone flagship: Hawker's only composite-fuselage super-midsize jet, built 2008–2013 with no predecessor or successor.
The Hawker 4000 offers coast-to-coast range, Mach 0.84 speed and one of the best cabins in its class for under $3M. The catch is an orphaned airframe: parts can be slow and costly, and resale is weak. Buy only with a strong support plan.
Buy it if
You want nonstop coast-to-coast or California-to-Hawaii trips with up to eight passengers, value a stand-up cabin and walk-in baggage, and have a Hawker 4000 specialist shop and a cash reserve for parts and downtime.
Skip it if
You need the jet to fly every trip without surprises, plan to sell within a few years, or operate from runways shorter than about 5,000 ft; a Challenger 300 costs more to buy but is far easier to own.
Biggest compromise
Support. Hawker Beechcraft cancelled the factory support plan in its 2012 bankruptcy, and Textron's maintenance plan for older Hawkers does not include the 4000.

- Bombardier Challenger 300 instead: Similar range with a wider cabin and strong factory support; it costs more to buy but is far easier to own and to sell.
- Embraer Legacy 500 instead: A newer fly-by-wire design with a 6 ft flat-floor cabin, shorter runway needs and lower fuel burn, at a much higher purchase price.
- Hawker 900XP instead: Costs more at about $4.6M but has broad Hawker 800-series support; about 2,800 nm of range in a smaller, 5 ft 9 in cabin.

Known issues
Limited airframe parts support
Factory airframe support ended in 2012; some parts are single-source or made to order, and owners report long waits for parts.
Costly landing gear overhaul
Early serials need a gear overhaul every 3,200 cycles, reported at $300,000 or more.
Expensive carbon brakes
Specialists say a new set of carbon brakes can cost up to $500,000.
Pre-buy checklist

Textron Aviation still holds the type certificate and certified a data-link upgrade in 2024, but most hands-on support comes from independent Hawker 4000 specialists in Wichita. Engines and APU are backed by Pratt & Whitney Canada and Honeywell.
Review

Strengths
- About 3,190 nm with four passengers and NBAA IFR reserves (the standard fuel safety margin), enough for Los Angeles to New York.
- Flat-floor cabin 25 ft long and 6 ft tall, kept at a 6,000 ft cabin altitude even at 45,000 ft.
- Asking prices around $2.25–2.9M for a jet that cost about $20M new and cruises at up to 482 kt.
Limitations
- Orphaned since 2013: no factory airframe support plan, and some parts are made to order or available from one source.
- Burns about 321 gallons an hour, so fuel alone runs about $805,000 a year at 300 hours.
- Weak resale: about 21% of the 61 active aircraft are for sale and average asks fell about 14% in six months.
The Hawker 4000 began life as the Raytheon Hawker Horizon, announced in 1996 as a clean-sheet jet sized above the Hawker 1000. It is not a stretched Hawker 800 or a relative of the small Hawker 400. Its fuselage is a carbon-fibre composite shell, an approach Raytheon also used on the Premier I, joined to a metal swept wing built by Fuji Heavy Industries. After a long certification, customer deliveries began in June 2008 and ended in early 2013, with about 70 aircraft built. JETNET counts 61 still in operation.
Pilot's take
From the flight deck the Hawker 4000 feels like a step above earlier Hawkers. The Primus Epic panel with five large screens, dual flight management systems and full-authority autothrottles reduces workload on long legs, and the jet climbs briskly into the low forties. Crews should respect its runway needs at high weights and plan carefully on short or wet runways, where thrust-reverser and braking performance matter. The bigger operational challenge is on the ground: a missing part can keep the aircraft parked for weeks, so operators lean on specialist shops and keep spares where they can.
Who this is for
A buyer who wants super-midsize range and cabin for a midsize-jet price, flies mostly from longer runways, keeps the jet for years rather than trading it, and is willing to work with independent Hawker 4000 specialists to keep it flying.
