The 1900D moves more people and cargo per dollar than a King Air, with a cabin tall enough to stand in. But most examples are worn ex-airliners, charter work needs two pilots, and it costs over $1.2M a year to run.

Buy it if

You need to move 10 to 19 people or bulky cargo on trips under about 700 nm, run a shuttle, charter or mining crew-change operation, and have professional crews and a maintenance shop that know the type.

Skip it if

You mostly fly two to six people, want a private lavatory and a quiet executive cabin, or plan to fly yourself. A King Air 350 or PC-12 will be cheaper to run and easier to resell.

Biggest compromise

It is an airliner first. Most examples on the market flew 25,000 to 40,000 hours, often with more than 30,000 landings, carry an airline cabin with no lavatory, and burn about 125 gallons an hour.

Lineage

What came before and after

What changed from the Beechcraft 1900C

  • Cabin raised 14 inches to about 5 ft 11 in, so most adults stand upright.
  • PT6A-67D engines of 1,279 shp replace the 1900C's 1,100 shp PT6A-65B.
  • Longer wing with winglets; wing fences removed and vortex generators added.
  • Twin ventral fins, higher stabilons and de-iced tailets improve stability and icing protection.
  • Collins EFIS-84 electronic flight displays with Pro Line II radios came standard.
  • Larger airstair door, bigger tinted windows and larger emergency exits.

  • Beechcraft King Air 350 instead: Faster, longer-legged executive cabin for up to 11 passengers, with far lower running costs and a much deeper resale market.
  • Pilatus PC-12 NG instead: Single-engine, single-pilot cabin with a big cargo door for up to nine passengers at roughly half the annual cost.
  • Beechcraft 1900C instead: Same airliner family with a cargo door and lower prices, but a lower cabin and less engine power.

Known issues

  • Wing spar fatigue cracking

Wing rear spar lower caps can crack; required modification kits must be installed. Missing work is a deal-breaker.

  • Very high airframe time

Most examples flew airline schedules and have 25,000–40,000 hours and over 30,000 landings.

  • Tail spar cracking checks

Vertical stabilizer spar caps need repeat inspections every 1,200 hours or two years.

Review

The full review

Strengths

  • Seats 19 passengers or carries about 4,200 lb of payload, with a 1,630 lb aft baggage room and cargo door.
  • Stand-up cabin about 5 ft 11 in tall and 25 ft long, rare among turboprops of any size.
  • Proven PT6A-67D engines of 1,279 shp each, with a 6,000-hour basic overhaul interval and worldwide support.

Limitations

  • Burns about 125 gallons an hour and costs about $1.24M a year at 300 hours with two pilots.
  • Most examples for sale have 25,000–40,000 airframe hours and airline cabins without a lavatory.
  • Range falls fast with load: about 1,280 nm light, roughly 400–700 nm with all 19 seats filled.

The Beechcraft 1900D is the last and most popular version of Beech's 19-passenger regional airliner. Beech built 439 of them between 1991 and 2002 for airlines such as Mesa, CommutAir and Air New Zealand's Eagle Airways, and the type became a workhorse of short commuter routes. It grew out of the 1900C, and its headline change was a cabin raised by 14 inches so most adults can walk upright down the aisle. Today almost every 1900D on the market is a former airliner now working for charter, cargo, mining and remote-community operators.

Pilot's take

From the flight deck the 1900D feels like a big King Air with more muscle. The PT6A-67Ds are flat-rated, so it keeps its power on hot days and at high-elevation airports, and the climb into the low twenties is brisk even when full. It is a two-crew airplane in practice: weight and balance planning is constant, the elevator and trim systems demand careful maintenance checks, and the original EFIS-84 cockpit shows its age. Hand-flown, it is stable and predictable, and it handles shorter regional runways well for its size. Bring airline discipline and it rewards you.
