72JetGrade70 = typical for turboprops

The 350i is one of the easiest large turboprops to own: it carries six adults and bags with full tanks, uses 3,300 ft runways and is backed by Textron's service network. You give up jet speed and pay twin-engine running costs.

Buy it if

You fly six to eight people on trips under about 1,200 nm, use short or high-elevation airports, and want a proven aircraft with factory service and engine programs that stay with the airplane.

Skip it if

Most of your trips run past 1,500 nm, you want to stand up in the cabin, or you would rather pay less for fuel and crew with a single-engine turboprop or a light jet.

Biggest compromise

Speed and cabin comfort. Top cruise is 312 kt, so Dallas to Teterboro takes about four and a half hours.

  • Beechcraft King Air 360 instead: Same range and speed with autothrottles, automatic pressurization, about 10 percent lower cabin altitude and a more private lavatory, at a much higher price.
  • Beechcraft King Air 350 instead: Same engines, weights and range for less money; you give up the newer cabin, quieter soundproofing and, on most examples, the Fusion cockpit.
  • Piaggio P.180 Avanti EVO instead: Burns about 79 gal an hour against 92 for the 350iER in AvBuyer's comparison and costs less per mile; choose it if fuel economy outweighs payload.

  • Phase inspections, Details 1–4 · 200 hr
  • Hot section inspection · 1,800 hr
  • Engine overhaul · 3,600 hr
  • Landing gear inspection every 72 months

Both programs spread hot section and overhaul costs into an hourly fee and can stay with the aircraft when sold; confirm the coverage level before buying.

Known issues

  • Engine overhaul exposure

Each PT6A-60A needs overhaul at 3,600 hours; without a transferable engine program the full bill falls on the owner.

  • Heavy rudder after engine failure

Rudder force can reach 180 lb at minimum control speed, so the rudder boost system and recurrent training matter.

  • Pro Line 21 avionics aging

Aircraft delivered before late 2015 use Pro Line 21; Collins sells modernization packages and full Fusion conversions.

Pre-buy checklist

0 of 9 checked

Textron Aviation supports the 350i through its service centers and programs for parts, labor, engines and propellers, and Pratt & Whitney Canada supports the PT6A engines through ESP.

Review

The full review

Strengths

  • Carries about 1,489 lb with full tanks, enough for six adults and bags without trading fuel for passengers.
  • Needs 3,300 ft to take off and 2,692 ft to land at maximum weight, keeping short and high runways usable.
  • Backed by Textron service centers, transferable engine programs and about 463 aircraft in service, which supports parts and resale.

Limitations

  • Top cruise is 312 kt; a Dallas to Teterboro trip takes about four and a half hours in still air.
  • The cabin is 4 ft 9 in tall and 4 ft 6 in wide, so nobody stands up inside.
  • Two engines burning about 107 gal an hour push the yearly budget to roughly $1.03M at 300 hours.

The King Air 350i is the 2009–2020 version of Beechcraft's largest King Air, part of a twin-turboprop line built since 1964. It replaced the original King Air 350 and was itself replaced by today's King Air 360. Underneath, it is the same airframe with the same pair of 1,050 shp Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-60A engines and the same 15,000 lb maximum weight as the 350. What the "i" added was a new cabin: Collins Venue entertainment with a swing-out monitor, LED lighting, electrically dimmed windows, reconfigurable rear seating and soundproofing that cut average cabin noise from 82 to 78 dBA. Aircraft delivered from late 2015 also have the Collins Pro Line Fusion touchscreen cockpit, with Wi-Fi and dimmable window shades as standard.

Pilot's take

From the cockpit, the 350i is a stable, predictable airplane that rewards discipline. The PT6A-60As are smooth and familiar, and either the Pro Line 21 or Fusion cockpit gives a single pilot real help with automation and synthetic vision. The one thing to respect is an engine failure at low speed: rudder forces can reach 180 lb, so the rudder boost system and regular simulator practice matter. It climbs at more than 2,700 ft a minute, lands short and carries a real load. It will never feel quick, but it is an honest, durable airplane.

Who this is for

Owners and companies moving six to eight people on regional trips, especially into short or high-elevation runways, who value payload, durability and service support more than speed or a stand-up cabin.
