The second of three versions of Bombardier's super-midsize jet, between the Challenger 300 and the Challenger 3500.

75JetGrade70 = typical for super-midsize jets

The safest bet in the super-midsize class. It flies 3,200 nm with eight passengers, has the widest flat-floor cabin in its group, and sells quickly. Rivals fly farther or faster, but few match its support and resale.

Buy it if

You fly four to eight people up to about 3,000 nm, want a stand-up, flat-floor cabin, and value a huge support network and a fast, predictable resale.

Skip it if

You regularly fly beyond 3,200 nm, want autothrottles or a lower cabin altitude, or need an external baggage door for skis and golf bags.

Biggest compromise

Range. With eight seats filled it flies about 3,200 nm, enough for coast-to-coast trips and California to Hawaii.

  • Gulfstream G280 instead: About 400 nm more range and a larger baggage hold, at similar prices; the cabin is slightly narrower.
  • Embraer Praetor 600 instead: Flies about 4,000 nm with fly-by-wire controls, but has a smaller fleet and support network.
  • Bombardier Challenger 3500 instead: The same airframe with autothrottles, a lower cabin altitude and a new cabin, for several million dollars more.

Engines & inspections

Engine hours until overhaul

  • Basic inspection · 600 hr
  • Engine turbine borescope · 4,800 hr
  • Engine compressor borescope · 9,600 hr
  • 48-month inspection every 48 months
  • 96-month inspection every 96 months
  • 192-month inspection every 192 months

Engines have no fixed overhaul time and run on condition; most listed aircraft have engines on an hourly plan, and the few without one deserve a discount.

Known issues

  • Left DC power center

Contamination can cause erratic electrical indications or power loss; repeated directives, with replacement estimated up to about $36,000.

  • Pitch trim directives

A series of directives on trim switches, wiring and the trim actuator; mostly checks, worst case about $55,000.

  • Engine inlet corrosion

Aluminum inlet barrels corrode; a carbon-fiber replacement barrel is an approved permanent fix.

Review

The full review

Strengths

  • Widest cabin in the class: 7 ft 2 in wide and 6 ft tall, with a flat floor.
  • Flies 3,200 nm with eight passengers, enough for New York to Los Angeles nonstop.
  • About 1,800 lb of payload with full fuel, so four passengers and bags never limit range.

Limitations

  • Range trails the G280, Longitude and Praetor 600 by 300 to 800 nm.
  • No autothrottle; the Challenger 3500 added one in 2022.
  • Annual cost runs about $2.4 million at 300 hours with two pilots.

The Challenger 350 is the second version of Bombardier's super-midsize business jet. The Challenger 300 started the line in 2004; the 350 replaced it in 2014, and the Challenger 3500 took over in 2022. Bombardier delivered about 420 of them. That makes it one of the most common business jets of the last decade, flown by NetJets, Flexjet and hundreds of companies and private owners.

Pilot's take

The Challenger 350 is a straightforward airplane to fly. The Pro Line 21 Advanced cockpit will feel familiar to anyone who has flown a Collins-equipped jet, synthetic vision is standard, and a head-up display with enhanced vision became an option in 2018. At maximum weight it climbs directly to 43,000 ft. The main thing pilots miss is an autothrottle, which arrived only on the 3500. Steep-approach approval opens airports like London City. The 4,835 ft takeoff figure and on-condition engines make it an easy jet to dispatch.

Who this is for

Companies and owners flying 200 to 400 hours a year with four to eight passengers, mostly within North America, who want a roomy cabin, two professional pilots, and an aircraft they can sell quickly later.
