Hawker 400XP (400A)
Last of five factory versions in the Diamond and Beechjet line, later rebuilt by Nextant and Textron.
The 400XP delivers 450-knot cruise, a 45,000 ft ceiling and a private lavatory for around $2M. The trade-off: it burns about 218 gallons an hour, needs two pilots, and most still fly a mid-2000s cockpit.
Buy it if
You fly two to five people on trips of 300 to 1,100 nm, care more about speed than cabin size, already budget for two pilots, and want 450-knot performance for around $2M.
Skip it if
You want to fly it yourself, carry lots of luggage, operate regularly from short or high-altitude runways, or want the lowest fuel bill in the light-jet class.
Biggest compromise
Fuel and engines. The Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D engines burn roughly 214 to 222 gallons an hour and are no longer in production, and published overhaul estimates run $250,000 to $575,000 per engine.

Lineage
What came before and after
What changed from the Beechcraft Beechjet 400A
- Maximum takeoff weight up 200 lb to 16,300 lb.
- Thrust reversers, TCAS II collision avoidance and vapor-cycle air conditioning became standard.
- Redesigned fuel system for longer range.
- A nine-passenger seating option joined the usual seven- and eight-seat layouts.
- Same Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D engines; later aircraft use the JT15D-5R version.
- Collins Pro Line 4 cockpit carried over from late 400As.

- Nextant 400XTi instead: The same airframe remanufactured with Williams FJ44 engines and an updated cockpit, trading a higher price for lower fuel burn and more range.
- Cessna Citation CJ2+ (525A) instead: A newer Cessna light jet certified for a single pilot with lower fuel burn, if you can accept a slower cruise.
- Learjet 40XR instead: A same-era light jet with similar speed and a two-pilot crew, built by Learjet with Honeywell engines.

Engine overhaul exposure
JT15D engines are out of production; published overhaul estimates run $250,000 to $575,000 per engine.
Aging Pro Line 4 cockpit
The original Collins avionics are two decades old; a Garmin G5000 retrofit cost about $500,000 in 2014.
Pitch trim actuator directive
An FAA directive requires replacing the pitch trim actuator every 1,800 hours.

Review
The full review
Strengths
- About 450-knot maximum cruise and a 45,000 ft ceiling, quick for a light jet of its era.
- Cabin about 4 ft 11 in wide with 305 cu ft of space and a private aft lavatory.
- Published value guides sit around $1.8M to $2.1M, low for a jet this fast.
Limitations
- Burns about 214 to 222 gallons an hour; variable costs run near $2,700 per flight hour.
- Requires two pilots; there is no single-pilot version of this type.
- Only about 600 lb of payload with full fuel, so long legs mean fewer passengers.
The Hawker 400XP is the final factory version of a design that began as the Mitsubishi Diamond in the early 1980s. Beechcraft bought the rights, built it as the Beechjet 400 and 400A, and Raytheon renamed the updated airplane the Hawker 400XP in 2003. Production ran through 2010, and JETNET market data shown by AvBuyer counts about 207 still in operation. The FAA certifies it as a Model 400A, so on paper it is a heavier, better-equipped 400A rather than a new aircraft.
Pilot's take
From the flight deck the 400XP is a straightforward, fast airplane with a swept wing that likes altitude. Light, it climbs strongly and settles near 450 knots, which is why so many have worked in charter fleets. The trade-offs show up in planning: fuel burn is high for the class, full-fuel payload is modest, and hot-and-high departures need careful performance work. The Collins Pro Line 4 cockpit is dependable but dated next to modern displays, and the Garmin G5000 retrofit is a major line item. Crews should know the type's history of engine core icing and the related operating guidance.
Who this is for
Owners and charter operators who fly one- to three-hour regional trips with a few passengers, want jet speed on a used-jet budget, and already plan for a two-pilot crew and a solid engine maintenance plan.
